Education now about ICT skills
The Special Advisers on Education to the Lagos State Governor, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, has said education is now about Information Communication Technology and ability of teachers to impact the required knowledge.
Wahab said this at the unveiling of the Eko Digital Skills Initiative.
He also said the past 12 months had shown that education did not rely only on the four walls of a structure, “Education is now about ICT and how we can impact the required knowledge,” he said.
Wahab explained that the Eko Digital Skills program was strategically placed to train and equip young students in Lagos State Government primary and secondary schools with the knowledge, skills and know-how that would enable them to thrive in the technology space in a couple of years’ time.
He hinted that the project would now be handled by tutor generals/Permanent secretaries in the education districts.
“I am glad that life is returning back to normal and that was why we have decided to repackage the project and hand it over to the TG/PS because they own the schools.
“This programme entails three phases; the phase one entails primary schools and the second phase will take care of those that are out of school; they will be taught digital marketing, sales management, data analytic, programming, clouding project management and many others.
“In the third phase, we will come to the classrooms and pick another 120 from each district. And what we intend to do is to ensure we integrate it with our Library Integration Programme. It is not going to change the content but to complement what we already have on ground.”
While responding on behalf of tutor generals in Lagos State, Dr Olayinka Ayandele, said,
“it is a wonderful initiative from the government and asking the districts to own it is also laudable. These children will not only get the benefit of learning but be equipped for the future.
“On behalf of other TG/PS, we say we accept this initiative. We will work together, all the six districts, and ensure that the students are properly engaged both online and offline. Doing this, it will benefit the students and their communities.”
